Some are protective coatings, some make a rust-like finish or "patina", and others change the color of the metals. If you're unclear about what these products do, we recommend that you do some experimenting -- small changes in metal preparation, the amount of finisher used, and the method of application can have big effects on your results. Achieving a consistent finish isn't difficult, but we suggest you take the time to figure out the effects these products have on your iron or steel before you undertake a project with an unfamiliar cleaner or finish.
