What is an MTR?
“MTR” is a term we hear every day. But what does it actually mean?
An MTR, or Material Test Report, is a document that provides detailed information about the chemical and mechanical properties of a specific batch of steel. Each report is tied to a unique heat number, which serves as a traceable ID for that material.
How It's Created
When a steel mill produces a batch, often 100 tons or more, samples are taken and tested to verify the material meets required specifications.
These tests check both the chemical composition and mechanical properties, such as strength and performance. The results are then recorded and tied to a unique heat number for that batch. This ensures every batch of steel is tested, documented, and traceable before it is used.
An MTR typically includes:
- Chemical composition, such as carbon and manganese
- Mechanical properties such as yield strength and tensile strength
- A heat number for full traceability back to the mill
Why It Matters
The example shown here is a simplified version, but it demonstrates how an MTR confirms the material meets industry standards and project requirements.
