Anne Byington Steel Supply Headshot

Meet Anne

Anne joined Steel Supply nine years ago after discovering the opportunity through a temp agency at a career fair. At the time, she had two job offers on the table, but Steel Supply stood out to her because she was excited about working for a business where she could make a meaningful impact. “I liked the idea of being part of a close-knit team instead of a huge corporation,” Anne shared.

Today, Anne serves as Steel Supply’s IT/ERP Manager and has become a key part of the company’s technology operations.

What Anne Likes Best About Steel Supply

For Anne, one of the best parts of working at Steel Supply is the balance between family atmosphere and challenging work. “Steel Supply is small enough that everyone knows each other and it feels like a family, but it’s also big enough that there are always new challenges and opportunities to improve things,” she said.

Over the years, Anne has earned the trust and freedom to take on projects that improve systems and processes across the company, something she finds especially rewarding. “One of the things I appreciate most is that I’ve been able to grow alongside the company,” Anne shared. “I started in ecommerce and digital marketing, and over time, I was trusted with bigger technical challenges and opportunities.”

A Passion for Problem Solving

Anne enjoys solving difficult problems and helping make her coworkers’ jobs easier. “I’ve always loved fixing things,” she explained. “Whether it’s troubleshooting a technical issue, improving a process, or connecting systems together more effectively, I enjoy figuring things out.”

The Experience

Anne was originally hired to work on Steel Supply’s ecommerce store and digital advertising efforts, but her role quickly evolved. During a web server upgrade project, her boss, Bill, recognized her experience working with Linux servers and technology systems. That opened the door for Anne to become involved with the company’s ERP system, where she gradually began helping with programming, troubleshooting, and supporting users with day-to-day issues.

When Steel Supply later migrated to a new ERP platform, Anne took a leading role in the data transfer and implementation of the new system. “Being part of the ERP migration and helping transfer years of business data and processes into a new system was one of the most challenging and rewarding projects I’ve worked on,” she said.

Today, as IT/ERP Manager, her work touches nearly every part of the company’s technology infrastructure, from websites and servers to ERP systems and user support.

Favorite Part of the Job

One of Anne’s favorite things about her role is the variety. “No two days are the same,” she said. “I get to solve all kinds of problems and help people across the company.”

She also appreciates the fun culture at Steel Supply and the relationships she has built over the years. “People genuinely want to help each other here, and that makes solving difficult problems a lot easier,” Anne said.

A Day in the Life

Anne’s day usually begins by checking that all the company’s critical systems are running smoothly. “When I first wake up, I check to make sure nothing bad happened overnight and that all the sites and systems are still running,” she explained.

From there, her day can involve anything from helping users troubleshoot problems to resolving issues with the website, ERP system, or company network.

Behind the Scenes

While many employees notice technology only when something goes wrong, Anne spends much of her time preventing problems before they occur. Much of her work takes place behind the scenes, from maintaining systems and monitoring servers to improving processes and keeping the company’s technology running smoothly so others can stay focused on their work. “A good day in IT is often one nobody notices because everything is working the way it should,” Anne said.

When things are running smoothly and urgent issues are quiet, Anne enjoys focusing on long-term projects that improve systems and workflows across the company. “Those projects are usually invisible to most people, but they help make everyone’s jobs easier in the long run,” she shared.

Life Outside of Work

Outside of work, Anne enjoys spending time with her two young boys. “They definitely keep life busy and fun,” she said.

When she has free time, she also enjoys crafting, sewing, and leatherworking. “I like working with my hands and creating things,” Anne shared. “That probably connects a lot to why I enjoy problem-solving so much at work too.”
