Aluminum is our second favorite metal.
Before about 1880, aluminum was actually rarer and more valuable than gold. The reason? Producing it was incredibly difficult. Before modern electrical processes existed, aluminum had to be extracted using expensive chemical reduction methods. Today, aluminum is produced by electrolysis, making it far more affordable and widely available.
What’s even more surprising is that aluminum is one of the most abundant elements in the Earth’s crust—more common than iron. The challenge has never been finding it, but separating it from the minerals where it naturally occurs.
Now, aluminum is one of the most widely used structural metals worldwide. It offers an excellent strength-to-weight ratio, weighing roughly half as much as steel while still providing impressive strength. This combination makes it ideal for applications in construction, transportation, manufacturing, and even aerospace.
