Preventing Rust

Steel exposed outdoors is constantly subjected to moisture, oxygen, humidity, and changing temperatures—all of which can lead to rust and corrosion. 

The best way to prevent corrosion is to create a barrier between the steel and the environment. 

Paint, powder coating, and protective primers are common and economical choices, while galvanizing provides longer-lasting protection by coating the steel with zinc. 

For more demanding environments, stainless steel or other corrosion-resistant materials may be appropriate. 

Good design also matters: avoid areas where water can collect, provide drainage, and keep steel surfaces clean of dirt, salt, and debris that can trap moisture. 

No protective coating lasts forever, so periodic inspection and touching up scratches, chips, or damaged areas can greatly extend the life of steel used outdoors.
